Andrew Ve Hansen is a quilt artist based in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Working with a variety of quilting techniques, he explores themes of culture, psychology, and global trends. He is drawn to the centuries-old craft of quiltmaking because it generally evokes feelings of comfort, warmth, and safety which can then be subtly subverted into whatever statement he is conveying. This dichotomy strengthens the impact of his message. And then sometimes he just likes to make pretty quilts.

Andrew also enjoys helping new and seasoned sewers, makers, and quilters expand their creative output by teaching techniques such as basic piecing, improv piecing, raw-edge appliqué, free-motion quilting, and thread painting. He is a firm believer that all craft is art and there are no rules when it comes to making art. He strives to make the learning environment truly collaborative so the maker feels complete freedom to create whatever they are envisioning.  That said, he is aware some creators require more structure in their learning experience which he is happy to provide if requested.

Andrew was born and raised in Northwest Ohio. He graduated from Otterbein University with a BFA in Musical Theater and moved to New York to pursue a professional career as a performing artist. Andrew eventually transitioned from the performing arts to other professional pursuits, though always trying to find ways to express himself creatively. He made his first quilt in the spring of 2017 at the ripe middle age of 43. While Andrew has always maintained a deep love of the arts, he never dreamed of becoming a visual artist. However, after making a few more quilts, he realized he was able to express himself through this art form in ways he never could as a performing artist. This unexpected pivot has opened a rich new world of creativity for which he is very grateful.

Andrew is a member of the Brooklyn Quilters Guild and the Manhattan Quilters Guild.
